About us

The Big Fellow is a small craft meadery. Our batches are rather small and limited. Relying fully on nature, we do not use preservatives, aromas and food dyes. We do not use clarifying agents to clear up mead (such as casein, egg white or gelatine) which are nowadays widely used in wine making process. For every single Trójniak we produce it takes at least one year of ageing before it is bottled.

We want to care about what surrounds us, we want to create bonds. That is why the characters in our mead stories are pollinators: cryptocephalus sericeus, green lacewing, hummingbird hawk-moth and large earth bumblebee. In this way we want to present you a story of these great insects that we named The Big Fellows. Without pollinators such as bees or even lacewings we would be simply doomed to extinction as most plants depend on animal pollinators to reproduce.

It was just a coincidence. During holidays in Zakopane in 2008, Bartek Zięciowski tried mead. Then, simply out of love for experiments he has started to make mead by himself, and after several years he finally managed to make his dream come true – he opened his own meadery.

LOCAL COMMUNITIES

Apart from nature, we also care about relations with surrounding communities. If possible, we always choose local companies, producers, or service providers. We try to be flexible and vigilant to what happens around us. At the beginning of 2020, with help from many kind people, we managed to launch a face shields printing campaign to support medical personnel, nursing homes and even a clinic in Lebanon. We produced 2177 face shields and distributed it in 57 facilities.

GOALS

We care about the planet and make plans how to develop and constantly improve. We continually try to reduce our carbon footprint. We think about nature in our daily choices. We collect rainwater and dream about a vertical garden which would become an oasis for pollinators living in our surroundings. We wish large earth bumblebees did not have to be even under partial protection in Poland. And most of all, we would like mead to become a natural drinking choice on a Polish table, just like Porto in Lisbon. Ahead of us, there is a great adventure and a great change in how we perceive mead. We invite you to become a part of this change, to invite insects to your gardens and savour our meads.

FOUNDERS

Bartek "Zięciu" Zięciowski

He made his first mead when he was 19. Since then, he constantly mixes, filters, decrystallizes, experiments, and improves the recipes. He received several awards at the Polish Mead Contest organized by the Great Confraternity of Fine Food, Beverage and Handicraft. A real handyman with a head full of ideas. Cold cherry Trójniak is his favourite mead.

Lucyna Zięciowska

For the first time she has tried mead when she met Bartek. A little bit later she became his wife. In The Big Fellow she is responsible for deadlines, documents and CSR. Her favourite mead is the one with elderflower and a bit of mineral water. It makes her think of holidays and weddings of her dear friends.
